Buy a personalised brick

Be part of our new building

For a donation of £25 current, past and future families can buy a personalised ‘brick in our wall’, which will become a feature of our new building when it is completed in the summer. Friends of our school, Church and community are also welcome to be part of our project!

Christmas Fayre
Thank you to everyone who supported the Christmas Fayre last Saturday approximately £1100 was raised by the Friends of St Luke’s and £230 by Church for refreshments and cakes. We had a fantastic turn out of both helpers and visitors. A special thank you to The Friends of St Luke’s Committee for all their hard work and to St Luke’s Church for the lovely refreshments. We would also like to thank all the families who sent in chocolate, sports equipment and cakes.

Christmas Cards
If pupils would like to send Christmas cards to their friends in school the school Christmas post box will be in the Entrance Hall from Monday 5th December. Alternatively if you would like to make a donation to Samira our Sponsored Child in lieu of Christmas Cards pupils could send just one card to be displayed in their class. If sending in a donation for Samira please do so in a labelled envelope (cheques made payable to St Luke’s School).

Dates For Your Diary
The Infant Nativity will be held on Tuesday 13th December in school at 2.15pm and 6pm.

The Junior Carol Concert will be held on Thursday 15th December at 2.15pm in school and 6.30pm in Church. The Grand Christmas Draw will take place at the end of the afternoon performance.

St Luke’s Church Christmas Tree Festival
If any parents/grandparents/carers could make scones, cakes or sandwiches for the Christmas Tree Festival on 9th/10th/11th December any contributions should be brought to school on the morning of Thursday 8th December – please indicate whether or not your food has been previously frozen. Many thanks in advance and we look forward to seeing you at the Christmas Tree Festival.

School have sponsored a tree at the festival and each class has helped in decorating it.

Advertising Space in the Carol Concert Programme
Advertising space is available in the Carol Concert programme for local businesses. The cost of the adverts are £5.00 for a half page and £10 for a full page, please send your advert and money into school in a labelled envelope by Wednesday 7th December to be included in the programme.

Dinner Money
Please note that after Christmas school meals will cost £2.00 per day or £10.00 per full week.

School Debt Policy
The school debt policy has been reviewed by the School Governors, a copy is available from the school website or the school office.

Hospice Teddies
Wigan and Leigh Hospice Christmas Teddies will be on sale in school from next week. The cost of the teddies is £1.50 and money should be sent into school in a labelled envelope.

Christmas Competition
Once again we are running our annual Christmas Competition, five different Christmas pictures/symbols will appear on the newsletter. Please make a note of these and complete the entry form which will appear on the newsletter on 16th December. The competition will be drawn on Wednesday 21st December (last day of school).

Non-Uniform Day
There will be a non-uniform day in school on Wednesday 23rd November in aid of our Christmas Fayre.  Please could infants bring in new  sports equipment  and juniors chocolate.

Gardening Club
We are hoping to run a gardening club and are looking for volunteers who could help with the running and maintenance of the club on a weekly basis.  Please contact the school office if you are able to help with this club.

Advanced Notice of Possible Strike Action
As you will be aware from the media, the combined teacher and school leadership trade unions may be taking industrial action on Wednesday 30th November. The decision to close the school or send pupils home is never taken lightly, but in this instance, where staff have elected to take lawful industrial action, I will have no choice but to take appropriate steps to ensure the health, safety and well-being of all pupils.  We are aware that school closures inconvenience parents and carers and so I am writing to give you advance notice of the likely impact  of the action on this school.  If the action goes ahead school will be closed on Wednesday 30th November.

Sex and Relationships Education Policy
We are currently reviewing our SRE Policy we would very much appreciate your views on this.  The policy is available on the school website or copies are available from the school office.   If you would like to make any comments on the policy please put these in writing and return to the school office by Friday 2nd December.

Pupil Planners
We are in the process of reviewing the content of our pupil planners and we would welcome any comments from parents regarding the content.  Please send any comments in writing to the school office labelled ‘Pupil Planners’.

Christmas Competition

The new Dinner Menus must be returned by Monday 17th October.

Football Training Dates

Better Reading Scheme
If any parents/grandparents are interested in coming into school to read with children on the “Better Reading Scheme” please contact Mrs Burns.

Uniform
Please check that your child has brought the correct uniform home from school, we have a number of pupils with named missing items from their uniforms.

Wanted
We will be collecting books in school for the Christmas Fayre after half term, we would be especially grateful for good quality children’s books.

Cycle Path
Could we please remind cyclists and scooter riders to show consideration to pedestrians using the cycle path.

Operation Christmas Child
Once again we are supporting this worthwhile charity and your child should have brought home a leaflet this week.  Filled shoe boxes can be returned to school after half term.

Thornton’s
Pupils should have all brought home a letter this week regarding Thornton’s Advent Calendars, please return the tear off slip and payment by Friday 4th November if you would like your child to take part in this activity.

Nestle Box Tops
We are now collecting Nestle Box tops in school.

Braithwaite Park Fun Day
On Sunday 16th October there will be a family fun day on Braithwaite Road Park 11am – 3pm.

Parents Afternoon and Evening
Parents afternoon and evening will be held on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

New Intake 2012
If you have or know of a child who is due to start school in September 2012 please make sure that a register of interest form has been filled in for them in order that they will receive an application form to apply for a place in a school.

Weekly Newsletter Advertisement
The opportunity has arisen for local businesses to place an advert on the rear of the school weekly newsletter.  The funds raised are for The Friends of St Luke’s who continue to raise funds for equipment in school.  The newsletter is distributed weekly to 209 children and their families.  Interested parties should contact the school office.

Harvest Assembly
Thank you to everyone who supported our Harvest Assembly on Tuesday.
Individual School Photographs
Individual School Photographs will take place on Thursday morning, families will be photographed together unless a letter is sent in stating otherwise.  If you would like to have younger siblings photographed with their brothers and sisters you may do so from 8.15am in the Infant Library (please use the door in the infant playground).
Dropping Off
Could we please ask that parents/carers do not drop children off for school on the main road outside school as not only does this cause traffic congestion but children also have to cross the school driveway unaccompanied.
Christmas Tree Festival
St Luke’s Church are holding a Christmas Tree Festival on the 9th, 10th, 11th December in Church.  There will be a variety of trees sponsored and decorated by groups and individuals from Church and the local community.   Admission will be £1.00 and there will also be refreshments, a raffle, bring and buy and a childrens bran tub.

Haircuts 
Could we please remind parents that any extreme haircuts are not permitted in school, these include tramlines and bright hair colours.
Play Area
The play area must not be used by children before or after school, pupils are only allowed on the equipment when supervised by staff.

Children must use a clear plastic water bottle in school with a sports type top, these are available from the school office for £1.25.  Water bottles must only be filled with water.

Please note that unfortunately The Friends of St Luke’s BBQ planned for this evening has been cancelled due to recent bad weather – we are sorry for any inconvenience caused.

 

Music Lessons
Music lessons started again on Tuesday 13th September, all pupils who requested lessons have been allocated places. There will be 6 lessons this term at a cost of £29.10 (£4.85 per lesson) please could payment be sent into school ASAP as music tuition should be paid for in advance – please make cheques payable to WMBC St Luke’s School.

 

Cardboard Tubes
Please could long cardboard tubes, eg. wrapping paper tubes be sent into school for the year five Australia topic.

 

Parent Governor
A vacancy has become available on the School Governors for a new Parent Governor. Application packs for this position were sent out with all pupils on Monday 12th September and must be returned by any interested candidates by Wednesday 21st September.

 

Lowton Toddler Group
Lowton Toddler Group are relocating from St Catherine’s Church Hall to Parkside Community Club, Rivington Avenue Golborne from Monday 12th September. The group runs from 9.30 – 11.30am and all babies/toddlers/parents/grandparents/carers are welcome.

 

School Dinners
Please note that school meals now cost £1.95 per day or £9.75 per week. Dinners should be paid for in advance and any meals not taken due to pupil absence will be credited. Cheques should be made payable to WMBC St Luke’s School.

 

Snack Money
Please send snack money into school ASAP if would like your child to have a snack at morning break. All pupils should have received a new snack record sheet and bag this week.

 

School Planners
